The Malaysia Steel Institute (MSI) membership programme has evolved in line with the changing needs of the industry. While MSI continues to represent and support the steel sector, the industry today operates within a much broader ecosystem involving government, finance, technology, education, data, skills development and other metal-related industries.

To further strengthen the industry, MSI aims to expand its membership beyond traditional steel industry players and bring together organisations that contribute to the growth, competitiveness and sustainability of the wider metals ecosystem.

A broader membership base will enable MSI to strengthen industry linkages, encourage knowledge and information sharing, facilitate collaboration, support capability development and create greater opportunities for engagement between industry and key stakeholders.

Through this expanded membership programme, MSI seeks to position itself as a collaborative platform connecting the steel and metals industry with the wider ecosystem that supports its development.

Industrial Relations Advisory Services

MSI plays a facilitative role in assisting and promoting cooperation among players across the iron and steel industry value chain.

MSI also acts as a conduit between iron and steel industry players and the Government in contributing towards policy development and resolving industry-related issues.

Membership Definition & Types

Term Life Member

Term Life Members are Malaysian manufacturers of iron and steel products — including raw materials, finished products or semi-finished products — and/or Malaysian companies engaged in activities related to iron and steel products, or associations of such companies.

Membership period: 20 years from the date of registration as a member.

Examples shown in the membership form include:

• Government agencies such as MIDA, MATRADE, CIDB and MIDF
• Associations such as SWAM, FMHMBA and MSMDA
• Companies (manufacturers)

Ordinary Member

Ordinary Members are Malaysian manufacturers of iron and steel products — including raw materials, finished products or semi-finished products — and/or Malaysian companies engaged in activities related to iron and steel products, or associations of such companies.

Membership period: Initially 2 years, followed by annual renewal.

Examples shown include:

• Associations such as SWAM, FMHMBA and MSMDA
• Companies (manufacturers)

Associate Member

Associate Membership is open to entities or individuals falling within the following categories:

• Companies engaged in the iron and steel service centre industry and appointed distributors of one or more Ordinary Members of the Institute.
• Companies supplying equipment, consumables and/or services to Ordinary Members of the Institute.
• Entities engaged in structural engineering, iron and steel detailing, architecture, quantity surveying and/or project management.
• Companies with an interest in the iron and steel industry, including recycling/recovery activities and iron ore producers.
• Institutes of higher learning with an interest in the iron and steel industry.
• Companies providing continued substantial financial support to the iron and steel industry and/or research, as determined by the Board.
• Trade or professional associations interested in the iron and steel industry.
• Other categories on a case-by-case basis (non-ferrous).

Important Notes

• Manufacturers must have a Manufacturing Licence (ML) issued by MITI.
• The new membership criteria are effective from 1 January 2024.
• The form states that MSI is a government agency under MITI and gazetted under the Parliament Act; therefore, members do not have voting rights.
