Message from the CEO

Welcome to the Malaysia Steel Institute (MSI). Malaysia’s iron and steel industry stands at an important point in its development. Global trade dynamics, technological transformation, decarbonisation, evolving environmental requirements and increasing expectations for resilient and responsible supply chains are reshaping the way steel is produced, traded and used. For Malaysia, these changes present both challenges and opportunities. As an agency under the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), MSI serves as a strategic link between Government, industry and other stakeholders in advancing the development and competitiveness of Malaysia’s iron and steel sector. Our role extends beyond responding to immediate industry issues. We seek to build the knowledge, institutional capability and long-term policy foundation required for a stronger, more sustainable and globally competitive industry. Our work is guided by a simple principle: Malaysia needs an iron and steel industry that is competitive, sustainable and capable of supporting the nation’s long-term industrial development. In this regard, MSI will continue to strengthen its role as an industry knowledge centre and think-tank, supporting MITI and the Government through credible data, research, policy analysis and evidence-based recommendations. We will deepen our understanding of the entire metals value chain—from raw materials and primary steelmaking to downstream manufacturing, trade, standards, technology and emerging low- carbon solutions. The Steel Industry Roadmap 2035 (SIR2035) provides an important strategic direction for this transformation.

MSI is committed to supporting its implementation and to working with Government agencies, industry associations, manufacturers, importers, exporters, academia, research institutions and other stakeholders to translate its aspirations into measurable outcomes. Sustainability will increasingly define the competitiveness of steel. Malaysia must prepare for a future in which carbon intensity, environmental performance, traceability and product credentials become important considerations in both domestic and international markets. Initiatives relating to decarbonisation, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), standards, certification, circularity, resource efficiency and green technologies must therefore be viewed not merely as compliance requirements, but as instruments for strengthening the long-term competitiveness of Malaysian steel. At the same time, sustainability must encompass environmental, social and economic sustainability. The transition of the industry must remain commercially viable, support investment and employment, strengthen domestic capabilities and create opportunities for Malaysian companies to move into higher- value activities. MSI will also continue to strengthen the availability and accessibility of industry knowledge. Through our research, statistics, publications and MSI Knowledge Series, we aim to progressively build a trusted 1 national repository of information on Malaysia’s metals industry. This knowledge base will support better policy formulation, industry planning, investment decisions, standards development and informed engagement among stakeholders. Ultimately, the future of Malaysia’s iron and steel industry cannot be shaped by Government or industry acting i ndependently. It requires collaboration. MSI therefore sees itself as a bridge between policy and industry, between data and decision-making, and between Malaysia’s industrial capabilities today and the competitive, sustainable steel industry we seek to build for the future. I invite our stakeholders to work closely with MSI, contribute their knowledge and perspectives, and participate actively in shaping the next chapter of Malaysia’s iron and steel industry. Together, we can build a resilient, competitive and sustainable Malaysian steel industry that supports national industrial development and strengthens Malaysia’s position in the regional and global economy.

Latest News

Malaysia’s total trade reached RM2.16 trillion in January–July 2026, up 24.7% year-on-year, while exports jumped 29.2% to RM1.165 trillion. The trade surplus more than doubled to RM170.5 billion, with ASEAN, China, the EU and the US remaining major markets for Malaysian exporters.

Indian steel prices are expected to strengthen further as higher coking-coal costs coincide with a post-monsoon recovery in infrastructure and automotive demand. Hot-rolled coil prices have already risen by around ₹4,000 per tonne since August, although higher imports — particularly from China — could limit domestic mills’ pricing power.

Canada’s retaliatory tariffs of 15%–50% on roughly US$20 billion of US goods have now taken effect after bilateral trade talks stalled. The implementation marks a material escalation from earlier tariff announcements and increases uncertainty for deeply integrated North American steel, metals and manufacturing supply chains.

MSI Decarbonisation Forum Series 2026

The MSI Decarbonisation Forum Series 2026 is a national industry platform designed to accelerate Malaysia’s iron and steel sector transition towards a competitive, low-carbon future. Established under the decarbonisation agenda of the Steel Industry Roadmap 2035 (SIR2035), the series brings together policymakers, steel producers, downstream industries, financial institutions, technology providers and other strategic partners to translate decarbonisation ambitions into practical industry action. Through focused forums, technical dialogue, business matching and ecosystem collaboration, MSI is connecting policy, capital, technology and industry execution—supporting investment mobilisation, technology adoption, carbon transparency, green market development and renewable-energy transition across the steel value chain. The 2026 programme covers six interconnected themes aligned with SIR2035 and Malaysia’s wider industrial-transition agenda.
